Batman: Black and White #6
“Batman Black and White” #6 wraps up the anthology with five stories showcasing excellent art by Cliff Chiang, Becky Cloonan and Adam Hughes, among others. In “Clay,” Cliff Chiang draws graceful fight scenes with multiple camera angles, an approach that highlights a young Dick Grayson’s acrobatic, nimble fighting style. From the first page, Chiang’s attention to detail delights the eye with dark folds of school blazers, the shadow side of a balustrade and the curves of the car. He makes the lack of color in “Clay” seem like a gift to the reader and not a limitation. The grand but decayed facade for the Old Monarch Theatre is especially beautiful. The plot of “Clay” explores the theme of molding one’s own image and self-worth vs. vanity. It’s on the obvious side and takes a decided back seat to the art. “Bruce” by Olly Moss and Becky Cloonan takes a look at Bruce Wayne from the point of view of a one-night stand and is the strongest story in the issue. While Bruce is regularly refe

Batman: Black and White #3
“Batman Black and White” #3 has five Batman stories: one street story, one rogue’s gallery tour, one detective story, one conceptual piece and last but not least, a story about super-heroism. “Rule Number One” by Lee Bermejo is a “Rules of the Streets” gang story set in Gotham, as if “Batman” had a crossover with a black and white version of “The Wire,” but with less moral nuance. Most of suspense of the story comes not from the interaction on city streets, but from the unnamed narrator and his connection with the Dark Knight. However, the payoff in the final scene doesn’t justify all the deliberate evasiveness of the story structure. Bermejo’s art is skillful and every panel shows elaborate attention to texture. The last page has a spectacularly photorealistic rendering of light refracting through a lit bike headlight. These plush surfaces enhance the depth and add interest to his cryptically cropped panel compositions. However, whether Bermejo’s hyper-detailed pencils and tonal sh

Batman: Black and White #2
“Batman: Black and White” #2 offers another solid collection of short stories concerning the Dark Knight himself as well as his rogue’s gallery, featuring the talents of Dan Didio, Rafael Grampa, Rafael Albuqurque, Jeff Lemire, and Michael Uslan, among others. Each story provides a great contrast from the one before it and navigates Bruce Wayne’s world with a clear, distinct voice that will steer the reader right into the next story with no hesitation. Though some stories are certainly superior to others, the anthology is more than worth it. The first story, “Manbat out of Hell” by Dan Didio with J.G. Jones on art, showcases some truly incredible art that benefits from the book’s black-and-white theme. The style reminds of classic 1960s Batman from Wayne’s costume to the scenery, wrought with lovely shading and stunning character design. Didio’s story comes together adroitly and succinctly for its short amount of space; it includes some particularly effective plot twists that prompt

Batman: Black and White #1
Batman: Black and White” #1, a revival of the anthology title from the 1990s, features five new Batman short stories by Chip Kidd, Neal Adams, Maris Wicks, John Arcudi, Howard Mackie, Michael Cho, Joe Quinones, Sean Murphy and Chris Samnee. It’s a pleasure to see that the five stories have strong creative rosters. All the artists have a confident, distinctive style. The atmosphere is unexpectedly light and funny all around, with no hint of noir. First up is “Don’t Know Where, Don’t Know When” by Chip Kidd and Michael Cho. It’s a cheery dad-and-son-type Batman and Robin story, with a deliberately dated feel for both style and content, including the title, which is a reference to lyrics from a WWII-era pop song, “We’ll Meet Again.” The lost-and-found mechanics of the plot are cute but superficial. It’s reminiscent of Paul Dini or Bruce Timm’s cartoons, but it doesn’t feel as polished. Kidd does write in a fun surprise cameo by another caped crusader, who feels less suited to a no-color
