Abyss

The official Twitter account for the Made in Abyss television anime series announced on Saturday that the show's 13th and final episode will be a one-hour special. The staff will also host an advanced screening of the final episode on September 24 in Tokyo. Staff and cast will be in attendance at the screening and will host a talk show. The anime's ninth episode aired on August 31. The show premiered in Japan on July 7, and is streaming in the United States on Amazon's Anime Strike service. HIDIVE is streaming the series outside of the United States. Masayuki Kojima (Black Bullet, Tibetan Dog) is directing the anime at the studio Kinema Citrus (Scorching Ping Pong Girls, Barakamon). Hideyuki Kurata (Samurai Flamenco, The World God Only Knows) is in charge of series composition, and Kazuchika Kise (Ghost in the Shell: Arise Alternative Architecture, xxxHOLiC) is designing the characters. The dynamic between this issue and the first is an interesting one. Both are slow and thoughtful, but the emphasis shifts somewhat from the art to the writing here while Snejbjerg and Stewart maintain the same high quality of last month’s issue. Because of the lighter, more ambient nature of the first issue, the conclusion to this story has more plot-oriented material; Mignola and Arcudi provide interesting insight into Abe Sapien’s character as he reacts to an unusual situation. As part of a mission to recover Melchiorre’s Burgonet, a medieval combat helmet that apparently has the ability to heal wounds of the wearer, Abe has woken up a Russian zombie that has boarded the ship used in the mission. While everyone reacts with horror and violence, Abe studies it and notices that the zombie isn’t making any threatening actions. He shows thoughtfulness and patience in dealing with the zombie, obviously not the sort to respond with extreme actions immediately. At the same time, we’re show

“Abe Sapien: The Abyssal Plan” #1 is a gorgeous comic. The artistic team of Peter Snejbjerg and Dave Stewart grabbed my attention with stunning pages like the two preview pages. The writing here is fairly simple and elegant in its minimalism, allowing the art to steal the show. Taking place in 1984, “The Abyssal Plan” focuses on Abe Sapien going on a recovery mission of Melchiorre’s Burgonet, a medieval combat helmet that apparently has the ability to heal wounds of the wearer. The Burgonet was possibly lost at sea in the 1940s when the Russians were transporting it, and Abe is needed to recover it from the wreck. It’s a fairly simple story that comes alive in the slow, moody execution. Abe plays the straight man to the personalities around him and has thoughtful reflections during his recovery of the Burgonet. When interviewing anime creators, it's not common to talk to someone from outside Japan, and it's even less common to interview someone from my own country of Australia. Kevin Penkin's score for Made in Abyss is already being hailed as one of the most captivating soundtracks of the year, playing a major part in how the show introduces its world as Reg and Riko venture down into the abyss. As a huge fan myself, I reached out to Kevin for an interview about his career and work on the show. It appears that all of your anime soundtrack work has been with Kinema Citrus. How did you come to work with them? I met Kinema Citrus when we were attached to the same project called "Under the Dog", which raised just over $875,000 on Kickstarter to fund a 30-minute OVA.
