Major News Topics

Whether you are researching for a class project or just for fun, it's important to learn about the major news topics of the day. Oftentimes, these topics can help you to make informed decisions when it comes to the future of your life.

Race and ethnicity

Whether it is through the media, politics or social interaction, race and ethnicity are Major News Topics. They are a reality, and they affect the health of the nation. There are many voices that can change the narrative about race in this country.

Often, racism is a system of racial bias that disadvantages members of a particular race. This system consists of practices, policies, and structures that unfairly benefit others in society. Inequities in access to employment, wealth, social benefits, and health are created.

Racial discrimination can be based on a person's gender, race, religion, or economic status. It also can be based on a person's sexual orientation. Regardless of how it occurs, racism creates inequities in a person's access to a range of social benefits and impedes the economic growth of the country.

Education

Despite its status as one of the leading news topics, media coverage of education is often lacking. This article presents a quantitative content analysis of national television news coverage of pre-K-12 education in the U.S. over the past three and a half decades. It identifies the major trends in the coverage, presents the most important statistics, and offers an explanation for the relative lack of coverage.

The biggest story was probably the 2012 Newtown school shooting. The event spurred a lot of coverage, but it didn't exactly lead to a new wave of school improvement.

The other big story was the afrocentric education movement of the late '90s. In the early '90s, there was a lot of coverage of afrocentric education, and it lasted for more than a decade.

Colon cancer

Several studies have shown that screening for colon cancer can save lives. However, many people are still reluctant to get invasive tests. Those at increased risk should be encouraged to get screened.

The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) recently published an article about a large Nordic-European clinical trial that showed an 18 percent reduction in colorectal cancer in those who had a colonoscopy. However, the results were skewed by the fact that only about half of the participants actually had a colonoscopy.

Many news reports were full of misinformation about the study. However, the article was a big hit on national news shows and was even mentioned in a terse letter from the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) to CNN.

The study was performed on patients in Europe, Asia and Australia. They were screened between 2009 and 2014. It was found that only about 42 percent of the study participants received a colonoscopy.

Desegregation in public schools

Across the United States, public schools continue to struggle with the issue of racial isolation. While studies suggest that schools do not negatively affect white students, racial segregation remains an issue. In some areas, the gap between white and black students is large.

Several studies have examined the academic and social effects of school segregation. Most of these studies do not specify a causal relationship between the two. In addition, studies are limited in their ability to pin down the cause and effect of school segregation.

Studies have shown that black students attending integrated schools have a lower probability of poverty. However, research has also shown that white students' grades are not affected by the presence of black students.

The federal government began to increase pressure on states to integrate schools. It began by intervening in lawsuits against intransigent school boards. The Justice Department joined the fight as well. In 1955, the Supreme Court issued implementation guidelines. These guidelines were meant to ensure that desegregation was carried out as swiftly as possible.

Foundational awareness of Black Lives Matter

During the summer of 2016, the hashtag #blacklivesmatter began to spark a social movement. It began as a social media campaign to create awareness about police brutality. Soon, allies joined together to support Black people and fight against racism. The hashtag evoked Black empowerment, economic mobilization, and heightened political participation.

The social movement gained national attention after the shooting of Trayvon Martin in Florida and the killing of Eric Garner in New York City. These events fueled widespread street protests across the country. In fact, 62 Fortune 500 companies posted about the movement on Facebook.

Black Lives Matter's success has been attributed to its focus on broader systemic reform. This includes equitable education, housing, and health opportunities. The movement also calls for reimagining policing and justice for victims.
