Which Collar Is Best for Dog Training?

Dog Training Collars | Best Collars, Harnesses, and Leashes for Training

Choosing the best dog training collar for your pet has never been more challenging, as there are a plethora of options out there all claiming to be the one true solution.

Although each dog is an individual, there are a number of common behavioural problems that can be addressed with training and socialization.

We talk to hundreds of people every year who are trying to find a solution to a problem and who contact us because we provide free expert advice and assistance with selecting the best dog collar for their needs.

Many of these clients are desperate to find a solution because they are afraid of losing their dog if the issues are not addressed, and they have spent hundreds of pounds on conventional training lessons or with animal behaviourists without success.

Many low-priced imports from other countries do not meet UK regulations and come with no guarantees or warranties, but the market is littered with them anyway.

You only need to look at the thousands of remote dog training collars being sold for a few pounds on eBay to see that the vast majority of them do not conform to safety standards.

We get calls every day from people who bought a cheap alternative and are now sorry they did. Investing in a high-obedience training for dogs collar will require more money up front, but it will provide you with peace of mind, a product that is guaranteed to last for at least two years, and compliance with all relevant UK regulations if you do it right.

It's also worth mentioning that the correction levels on some of these low-priced imported dog collars are too harsh for your dog's comfort. Recently, I spoke with a buyer who had purchased a collar with 100 levels of correction but no warning beep or button. It's ridiculous, because then the dog would have no chance to learn anything.

As a company, we only wanted to be associated with the brands of dog training collars that were fair, reliable, effective, and legal, so we researched all collars available before deciding which collars to sell.

After declining offers from many manufacturers, we are now able to offer what we believe to be the industry's finest brands. To begin, all of the brands we carry are RoHS approved, as is required by current UK legislation. However, because it is more expensive for manufacturers to design their products to meet these standards, you can bet that the majority of inexpensive collars are not.

All of the brands we carry come with a minimum 2-year warranty, and some even have a 3-year warranty, to give our customers peace of mind that they will receive the level of performance they expect.

Given that these are often electronic products operating in challenging environments (such as harsh terrains and weather), this is crucial. If your dog is following a scent and racing towards a busy street, a remote training collar is a necessity.

Training a dog requires diligence and perseverance over time; it would be counterproductive to invest in a training collar only to have it break down in the middle of the process.

If for any reason your dog's trainer breaks, you can rest assured that you will receive a replacement as soon as possible so that you can continue your training program.

We want you to be completely satisfied with your purchase of a dog training collar, so we provide you with free advice and assistance in making the right choice.

We think every dog and every circumstance is different, and it's important to note that one dog's "magic bullet" may be the wrong solution for another.

We have the expertise to point you in the right direction because we sell collars to dog trainers and have daily conversations with dog trainers about training techniques.

And which collars are the best, if any, today? We have had great results with both spray and static pulse collars, the former of which is more widely available than the latter.

However, spray collars, of which there are only a handful of options, typically aren't effective beyond a range of 100 to 300 meters.

Some issues are unique to spray training collars, as the presence of a spray nozzle makes it more difficult to maintain cleanliness, and the seals around the spray are more likely to dry out and break than those of static collars.

People make these claims all the time, and every time I do, I remind them that, yes, when used properly, these tools can be incredibly powerful. However, ultimately, the onus of responsibility rests squarely in the hands of whoever is controlling the device in question.

An automobile driven recklessly and dangerously by one person can be driven cautiously and safely by the vast majority of its occupants.

We've had a lot of success selling static pulse remote collars to people with deaf dogs who are having trouble with recall. On the lowest setting, the dog feels nothing more than a tap on the neck.

When first using a static collar, we recommend starting with the lowest possible setting and working your way up until you can tell from your dog's reaction that they are experiencing a mild sensation.

Usually, this level of static is all that's needed to break up the dog's train of thought. There's no doubt that the settings might need to be adjusted for dogs with a higher propensity for willful defiance. The best static collars have gradual increases in intensity over a few settings, rather than sudden jumps.

All of the collars we sell have a beep tone, which is crucial to the training process because it serves as a warning signal to the dog and gives the dog an opportunity to respond. Many of the collars we sell also include a nick button or short stimulus in addition to a button for longer levels of stimulus. Don't ever buy a collar that doesn't have this feature.

Canicom, PetSafe, Innotek, and Sportdog are the only brands we'd ever buy again. In subsequent articles, we'll begin to give you a completely independent view on all these collars, explaining in detail the pros and cons of each collar, and all these brands sell good quality training collars.
