Top 10 Best Big Brothers in Anime

In anime, there are all sorts of big brothers. There are those ideal types who are kind to their siblings, the pranksters, and of course, there are those with the sister complex.

Come get some brotherly love! Check out our list and see who makes the cut for the Top 10 Best Big Brothers in Anime.

10. Sora from No Game No Life

Along with his sister, Sora is one half of the legendary online gamer entity Blank. While he and his sister are technically step-siblings, they are incredibly close and there is nothing this anime brother would not do for his beloved Shiro.

9. Katsuya Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler) from Yu☆Gi☆Oh! Duel Monsters

Joey has one of the most touching stories of any anime brother. He and his sister were separated at a young age when their parents divorced and his younger sister later began to lose her eyesight.

With expensive surgery as her only hope for a normal life, Joey went from novice to near-champion in the Duelist Kingdom tournament where he dueled against champions and even his best friend to save his sister.

8. Gohan Son from Dragon Ball Z

Although Gohan did not become a brother until about 2/3 of the way through Dragon Ball Z, he makes this list for his importance to his younger brother Goten.

In a 7 year time skip where their father Goku was absent, Gohan assisted his mother in raising Goten and served as both a brother and father figure in his younger sibling's life.

7. Takeshi (Brock) from Pokemon

Brock may have the most siblings out of any brother in anime, or any form of media for that matter. When his parents left the family it was up to Brock to take care of his 9 brothers and sisters - on top of his duties as a Pokemon Gym Leader.

6. Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass

Lelouch shows two very different personalities - one of caring brother and one of a devilish anti-hero. In his role as Zero he leads a resistance against the world's most powerful empire, but as Lelouch, his number one priority is his disabled sister, whom he will protect by any means necessary.

The fact that he was able to make the world a better place and leave it to Nunnally definitely serves as one of the best examples of an older brother's actions.

5. Killua Zoldyck from Hunter X Hunter

Whereas most of the siblings on this list only have each other, Killua is actually the middle child of the Zoldyck family, having both a younger brother, a younger sister, and two older brothers. However, he has almost a non-existent relationship with his younger brother Kalluto, and his older brother Milluki.

Despite the reputation of his family, Killua was willing to go against them to save his sibling Alluka. While others would use Alluka and her power to their own advantage, Killua loves Alluka as a person, and not an object.

4. Sesshomaru from InuYasha

Of all anime brothers, Sesshoumaru may have the most hostile relationship with his half-sibling Inuyasha. The son of a legendary great dog demon, Sesshoumaru seeks to live up to his father's name and is one of the most powerful demons in the series.

While he normally has a calm demeanor, this demon will raise hell against anyone who stands against him or the few people he cares about.

3. Itachi Uchiha from Naruto

Considered a child prodigy in his home ninja village, Itachi Uchiha became the scorn of his homeland when he murdered his entire family - sparing only his younger brother - in a single night for mysterious reasons.

His eyes possess the legendary Sharingan ability, allowing him to create powerful illusions and copy any ninja technique.

2. Portgas D. Ace from One Piece

One of the best things an older brother can do for a younger brother that admires them is to be an "icebreaker", or pave the path in order for them to follow in your footsteps just a little bit easier.

Ace perfectly fulfills that role for Luffy: constantly staying one step above him as they fought, traveling to the Grand Line before him, getting a powerful Devil Fruit, joining one of the strongest pirate crews... the list goes on and on.

1. Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist

Throughout the series we see flashbacks of how Ed and Al's relationship was perfectly normal before their failed Human Transmutation attempt to bring back their mother, and how their relationship struggles to remain the same as they search for the Philosopher's Stone.

Many characters attempt to stand in the Elric brothers’ path, and some of them even try to mentally mess with their relationship. However, as we come to see, their bond is arguable the strongest brotherly bond in all of anime.

With Ed refusing to let anyone prevent him from attempting to bring back Al's body and Al's absolute faith and trust in his older brother, we have ourselves a series that serves as the perfect example of what it means to be an excellent older brother.
