Synopsis

Star Wars: Dark Times – Out of the Wilderness #5
“Star Wars: Dark Times – Out of the Wilderness” #5 offers up all of the good and the bad that awaits fans of George Lucas’ most famous brand. The final issue of the “Out of the Wilderness” storyline, this comic has the feel good moments found at the end of each of the original trilogy movies: heroes looking to the future while thankful for the victories they’ve achieved. It also balances in the foreboding sense of evil not yet vanquished that was present in both “Star Wars” and “The Empire Strikes Back.” Unfortunately, while we get (good) teases of fan favorite characters like Vader, we’ll simply never get enough. Vader appears in a handful of panels, which will certainly be the tipping point for at least a couple sales on this issue, but his actions here amount to little more than a cameo appearance. Sure, that allows Randy Stradley and artist Douglas Wheatley more time and space to develop the expanded universe characters, but it falls short of being a satisfying appearance. Throu

Star Wars: Dark Times – Out of the Wilderness #4
The story in “Star Wars: Dark Times – Out of the Wilderness” #4 is actually a great deal more complex than Dass Jennir’s attempted rescue of Ember Chankeli from a band of desert pirates. While the basic thrust of the tale is Jennir trying to rescue Ember, Jennir is being targeted by an assassin, searched for by the crew of the Uhumele and trailed by Darth Vader. While Vader is scarce in this issue, there’s little doubt he’ll turn up in a big way very soon. However, the story at hand is a thriller as Jennir tries to save lives, including his own. The assassin brings the thrill, determined to take down Jennir and collect the bounty, even if it means doing some of Jennir’s work for him — like killing the desert pirates. Randy Stradley’s story feels less like a “Star Wars” tale and more like an espionage yarn. Stradley has fleshed out the characters sufficiently to move the story forward including the crew of the starship Uhumele, who we see for one page in this entire issue. There’s so

Star Wars: Dark Times — Out of the Wilderness #3
Under what is arguably the most non-“Star Wars” cover ever crafted, the continued adventures of Jedi survivor Dass Jennir brings in a number of familiar faces to those long-term readers of the “Dark Times” saga. Fans of the classic trilogy might even be satisfied to find a certain black body-armor and flowing cape-clad figure striding through these pages on a quest to extinguish the Jedi. Of course, the Jedi he’s pursuing just so happens to be (yup, you guessed it) Dass Jennir. Problem is, Jennir’s being pursued by someone else and also trying to survive on a planet that is quite brutal and full of surprises. Add to that the fact that Jennir is more like Han Solo than Obi-Wan Kenobi when it comes to using the Force (Jennir passes out trying to use the Force to heal a horse-type creature), and this story has a lot of promise, a fair share of interesting characters, the open-ended threat that anything can happen in these early days of the Empire and some stunning art. Star Wars: Dark Times – Out of the Wilderness #1
Over two years ago, I reviewed the first of issue of the “Star Wars: Dark Times” series and claimed that it delivered the goods on what happened between “Revenge of the Sith” and “A New Hope” (or “Star Wars” to those of us born before 1980). That series, for whatever reason, has become less of an ongoing series and has morphed to follow the Hellboy story structure in that it is now a series of miniseries. Whatever the reason for the structure and pacing change, there is no denying the fact that this is Darth Vader doing what he was meant to do in the prequels: hunting down Jedi and taking no flak from anyone. From the menacing approach depicted on the cover to the deflection of blaster bolts ten pages into the issue, Darth Vader is so good at being bad, all in the cause of tracking down a rumored Jedi. Mick Harrison (or Randy Stradley) brings the Star Wars galaxy to life, with a vast array of characters, aliens, and personalities populating this issue. Harrison’s Vader is evil and
