Synopsis
Yorito is a high school student who likes to take photographs of the sky. A chance meeting introduces him to Matsuri, but she is no ordinary girl—it turns out that she’s actually a 350 year-old Yaka, an immortal being that cannot go out into the light! As such, Matsuri has been forced to live a life of solitude, and Yorito is the first friend she’s ever had. But there is much more to the Yaka than first meets the eye, and a sword-wielding man named Takeshi seems intent on harming Matsuri, but for what reason? Now thrust into a supernatural battle, will Yorito have the courage to protect their friendship for Matsuri’s sake?

Solar: Man of the Atom #2
Writer Frank Barbiere introduced the Seleski family last issue, establishing dad Phil as the character of Solar, son Colin trying to help his father control and understand his powers, and Colin’s twin sister Erica who doesn’t want much to do with either of them. With those intros out of the way, Barbiere focuses on Erica in “Solar: Man of the Atom” #2, and her unusual condition and experiences following last issue’s explosive conclusion. Consequently, artist Joe Bennett doesn’t get to draw the title character as much this time, but when he does Solar very much looks to be the Man of the Atom, and a powerful one at that. Barbiere uses the ’90s Valiant Comics incarnation of the character as the template, but immediately throws a spotlight on the differences from that version, rather than the similarities. Most notable is the notion that Seleski has twin adult children, and in this issue Barbiere explores another disparate idea, namely that the adult child trying to distance herself fr

Solar: Man of the Atom #1
“This all started with an accident. A spark.” That is how the third of four Gold Key books from Dynamite, “Solar: Man of the Atom” #1 under the supervision of editor Nate Cosby (who has also headed up “Flash Gordon” and “Kings Watch”) is yet another solid reimagining of a classic character through a modern filter with tremendous results. Written by Frank J. Barbiere with art by the always-solid Joe Bennett, this comic book provides a fine introduction to the character of Solar (even though he isn’t called by that name in this issue) and the world around him, from the general public perception to his own family life. More frequently referred to throughout “Solar: Man of the Atom” #1 as “Atom Guy,” but preferring the moniker of “Man of the Atom,” the main character of the book appears on the scene in the midst of a standard-issue, bargain-bin comic book bank robbery. Barbiere uses the moment to define the character, his public perception and powers. He then flips the scene on end and

Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom #2
Does anyone else remember the “Solar, Man of the Atom” issues written by Jim Shooter in the early days of Valiant Comics? They weren’t rocket science (no pun intended) but they were solid, enjoyable comics. And while I understand that for copyright reasons Shooter would need to go in a radically different direction for the new “Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom” title for Dark Horse, I found myself more than a little surprised that this comic was written by the same author. Shooter’s first storyline in “Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom” involves a hack writer who is able to bring characters he’s written to life, only to find out that his bad writing has made them hard to fit in with modern day Earth. His characters have clunky dialogue and swearing, and at one point Doctor Solar even says, “Pickerel must be a really bad writer if that’s the way he made you talk.” Here’s the problem, though. I’m not that much more impressed with Doctor Solar’s dialogue. This is superhero by the numbers writi

Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom #1
That was. . . disappointing. Having heard, read, and presumed awesomeness about “Solar” (“Doctor” or otherwise) in the past, I was stoked to try out a whole new world. Unfortunately that world was filled with art that featured phototraced (or so they appear) characters that are inconsistently rendered through their burdensome origin stories. The revelation of Doctor Phil Solar’s transformation during his conversation with Doctor Malcolm Clarkson took four pages and was little more than swirly colors around talking heads. For four pages! I understand the need for sharing the origin with the readers, but I’m also convinced there are snazzier ways to do it. The rest of the issue features a plot that seems unnecessarily cliched as one man’s imagination comes to life in the real world. That rip in reality does get a slight twist as we learn who set the circumstances in motion that allow the anomalies in. Those anomalies, sprung from the mind of a comic book writer (really) named Whitmor
