Over the past week, I've done some extraordinary things. I've broken in and out of prison, I've stolen military hardware from an aircraft carrier, and I've parachuted into a top-secret lab under cover of night. It's been a pretty great time, in GTA Online. GTA Online is the MMO-lite online component of Grand Theft Auto V, in which you take control of a custom avatar of your choosing and take on missions and challenges across the entirety of GTA V's sprawling map. For all the various things you can do in GTA Online, heists, which were released as a free update last week, are a whole new kinda thing. The point of the “Pretty Deadly” story has finally arrived where the plot is revealed and readers can finally make an informed decision about its direction. With most of the cards on the table, Kelly Sue DeConnick and Emma Rios dispense with the drip-feed mystery, letting the action run wild and the plot roil towards what will surely be an epic showdown at Death’s lovely one bedroom hellhole. Up until the third issue, I had no idea what was happening in this book but still really liked what I was reading — a testament to DeConnick’s genre-mashing scripts. The lyrical, spaghetti Western feel of the dialogue is still present and now that it’s no longer being used to keep secrets from characters — something even Sissy complains about — it enhances the action. That readers know who all the characters are to one another it’s easier to care about what happens to them. Answers come faster than a flash flood in the third issue of “Pretty Deadly” — and it’s about time. I’ve enjoyed the past two issues for their atmosphere and eerie artistry, but the lack of answers or clear character stories had made it difficult to invest in anyone’s fate. Issue #3, however, offers enough story to ground the narrative without losing too much of the mystery that’s made this series such a strange pleasure. Bunny and butterfly, the “narrators” of the tale, grow on me with each use. While two pages is a lot of space to dedicate to them — since they don’t seem to move the plot — the use of undead, inhuman storytellers in a series about mythmaking and Death’s daughter is very appealing. Plus, they bring some lightness. The other characters are also developing more personality and power, and DeConnick reveals the backstory subtly when she can afford to, and creatively when she can’t.
