Anime Series Like Astra Lost in Space

Each year, the students of Caird High School are placed in groups for Planet Camp. When group B5 land at their camp site, they are engulfed by a mysterious sphere of light that transports them into the middle of space, 5,000 light years away from home. After discovering an old space ship, they begin their very long journey home.

Despite a generic appearance, this show has a lot to love. It doesn’t do anything particularly new other than showing you unique worlds and presenting you with an intriguing mystery to solve, but it does so in a way that just draws you right the fuck in. For Fans of Kids in Space

Infinite Ryvius

In the distant future, Kouji Aiba and Aoi Housen are training to be astronauts in the Liebe Delta. However, when saboteurs strike the station while the kids are on a dive procedure, the space station plummets into a plasma field linking the planets. With all the adults on board killed, it is up to the young astronauts-in-training to make the journey home and deal with the growing tension between them.

Both shows focus on kids that are left alone in space. However, while Astra remains upbeat, Infinite Ryvius is a much more serious and darker series. It is essentially like what Astra would be like if things went more poorly.

Starship Operators

A class of cadets returning home after a cruise on a new star ship are shocked to find their country at war. However, their country has peacefully surrendered, so these brave young cadets decide to take this new ship and wage their own war, though not without the financial aid of a galactic news network that makes their war into a reality TV show.

As a bunch of young people traveling through space, you will see a lot of similarities between these two. However, Astra doesn’t have a war element, but rather replaces it with an intriguing mystery. Though both series play out like a reality show sometimes.

Bodacious Space Pirates

Young Marika keeps herself busy with a job at a retro cafe in the space yacht club. However, one day two strangers approach her, claiming to be the subordinates of her dead father, and demand she take command of the space pirate ship Bentenmaru. As an agreement was made after the war of independence a century ago that the ship must be inherited by the captain’s next of kin, so Marika begins her exciting new life as a space pirate.

Don’t be put off by the name, it is not as lewd as it sounds. Instead, you follow a child going on a grand space adventure. However, the cast is overall older in Space Pirates rather than the young school kids in Astra.

For Fans of Survival

Dr. Stone

One day, all of humanity was engulfed in light and mysteriously petrified. After a few millennia, two high schoolers awaken and find themselves in a wild world. These two set out to cure those still frozen and kick start civilization.

Due to a mysterious event, both anime series feature children put in an unbelievable situation. However, while Astra focuses on them trying to get home, Dr. Stone is about the kids trying to rebuild civilization.

Uninhabited Planet Survive

In the 22nd century, Earth has become uninhabitable, and humanity has spread out to other planets. While on a school trip through space, a class enters a gravity storm and finds themselves stranded on a seemingly uninhabited planet. However, while they struggle to survive, they don’t know what else is lurking in the shadows.

Take the kids in Astra and strand them on a planet, and you have Uninhabited Planet Survive. It is kids surviving, but in a different setting. They live on a planet rather than a spaceship, but each child also has some sort of specialty.

Bokurano

During their summer vacation, 15 children are enjoying summer camp together. One day, they decide to go explore a cave by the sea, inside they meet a mysterious man named Kokopelli who is surrounded by high-tech equipment. Kokopelli claims to be a game developer and asks if the children would help him test it. Each child signs a contract, but instead of playing a game, they are actually piloting a giant mech to defend the earth from 15 different alien invasions.

While Bokurano is much more serious, it is about kids put in an impossible situation. They struggle to survive, but it doesn’t end up as happily as Astra.

For Fans of Space Exploration

Space Battleship Yamato

In the year 2199, Earth is nearly destroyed by an alien race known as Gamilas. In its desperation, the Earth Defense Force was established to be their last line of defense. However, when they receive a communication, they are tempted into the depths of space to the planet Iscander in search of a device to restore Earth. To make this 148,000-light-year trek, the formidable Space Battleship Yamato and its crew are tasked with navigating the Gamila Empire to save the human race.

Both series are grand journeys through space. Space Battleship Yamato doesn’t have as much planet exploration, but it does have some beautiful space visuals. Furthermore, you get to see the crews really come together and be a team.

Space Dandy

The universe is a vast and strange place, full of even stranger beings. For a man named Dandy, his job is to travel around and register new species for a reward. What should be an easy job is made less so by a series of odd coincidences that happen along the way.

While Space Dandy is definitely more flamboyant, his job takes him to a lot of different planets where he meets a number of alien life. Astra is smaller in scope, but satisfying to that same sense of wonder.
