Anime Series Like I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job

Dreaming of becoming a hero, Raul joined the Hero Training program. Unfortunately, with the demon king defeated, there is no market for heroes. Instead, Raul gets a job at an electronics store. He soon finds out that his new co-worker is in fact the old demon king’s daughter.

Hey, its one of those series with a long title because light novel marketing is ridiculous! Well anyway, in this world of isekai, it is refreshing just to see an old-fashioned fantasy comedy.

For Fans of Fantasy Comedy

The Devil is a Part-Timer

Just as he was on the cusp of conquering his world, Satan is thrown through a portal to Tokyo. Although he cannot use magic in this world, he is still motivated to conquer it, but first, he must get a job and pay his rent on time.

A more similar series, there is not. Essentially, a demon king comes to our world and works part=time. The hero that would defeat him comes over too and becomes an office lady. It is just supernatural fantasy beings doing boring retail jobs! Yay!

Gabriel Dropout

After graduating high school in Heaven, angels are sent down to Earth to guide humans down a righteous path. Heaven had high hopes for Gabriel, the top of her class. However, when she descended, she ended up skipping classes and getting addicted to online games.

In both series you have people that you would expect to be doing something more important than working or being a NEET. However, that is where the comedy lies. They find aspects of our modern world and are drawn to them despite the other supernatural trappings.

Outbreak Company

With parents that write light novels and draw eroge, Kanou Shinichi was born to be an otaku. One day, he finds himself transported to a fantasy world full of elves and dragons. In this world he is given a quest, not to fight monsters, but to become a moe missionary to teach everyone on the finer points of being an otaku.

While Outbreak Company differs by being an isekai, in both shows you find the main character ends up being a sort of teacher. While Raul is the more serious of the two, they are quite the ecchi comedies that feature fantasy worlds.

For Fans of Cute Demon Royalty

Maoyu ~ Archenemy & Hero

After fifteen years of warfare with the demon world, the Hero is unsatisfied with their advance and rushes forward to the Demon Queens Castle. There he not only finds a beautiful woman that is the queen, but she needs his help. To his surprise, she offers a way to not only help his country, but hers as well. Together, they join forces to make that dream a reality.

While both series are about the interactions between a hero and a demon, Maoyu is much more serious. It has an actual plot and it is quite good. Of course, it still makes time for some comedy and ecchi moments as well.

Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero

Several selected members from Earth were chosen and sent to other worlds. Only about half of them returned, with many who did bringing back several trinkets. For Akatsuki, what he brought back was not a trinket, but the daughter of the demon lord he defeated.

If Raul was able to become a hero, this could have been his anime series. Obviously, in Aesthetica, the hero is a actually a hero. However, both series are about these guys hanging out with the children of their enemies in various circumstances.

Testament of New Devil Sister

One day, Basara’s father brings home two beautiful girls and introduces them as his new siblings. However, it isn’t long before he learns that these two girls are actually demons. More specifically, the former demon lord’s only daughter and her succubus servant. Of course, Basara himself is a former member of Heroes, an organization sworn to fight demons. However, after developing feelings for them, he decides to protect his new sisters instead.

Take the demon king’s daughter out of her job in the electronics store, split her in half and make her sisters to the protagonist, then you have this series. No, really. Both are kind of ecchi comedies where the demon king girls are kind of air-headed and the hero always ends up scolding them.

For Fans of Working

Working!

Due to his love of cute things, Souta Takanashi ends up taking a job at the Wagnaria family restaurant in Hokkaido at the behest of the small and cute Popura Taneshima. However, while he enjoys doting on Popura, he must stay on his toes while working with his more eccentric colleagues.

While Working isn’t supernatural, that doesn’t mean that there is a shortage of eccentric characters. This series draws its comedy from work life, but isn’t enhanced with things like demon king daughters.

Servant x Service

Servant x Service follows three new civil servants in the city of Mitsuba. Each character is driven by their own personal motivations, but never-the-less they are encouraged to work hard for the city even if it is a thankless job.

Wish there was less fantasy in I Couldn’t Become a Hero and they just focused on the job? Well this is like that. However, like I Couldn’t Become a Hero, Servant x Service does draw comedy from the mundane circumstances of life as well.

Spice and Wolf

For generations, Holo was a revered wolf deity that helped the local wheat harvest in exchange for tribute. However, as the villagers become more self-sufficient, they no longer need or even believe in her anymore. During her annual festival, she sneaks into the cart of Kraft, a visiting merchant, hoping he will let her hitch a ride home.

While being a traveling merchant isn’t much like working in an electronics store, it is a profession and it does have the opportunity for shenanigans. Like I Couldn’t Become a Hero, Spice and Wolf is about a normal guy’s life intersecting with a supernatural person and it leading to all kinds of adventures.
