Supernatural and mystery were a match made in heaven. If you enjoyed it in this literary-tinged show, then check out some of these anime recommendations.

For Fans of Extraordinary Detectives

Blood Blockade Battlefront

Vampires, fishmen, supersonic monkeys – they are all normal residents living alongside humans in Hellsalem’s Lot, formerly known as New York City. When a gate between Earth and the Beyond popped up there three years ago, old NYC became dominated by monsters and now Libra, a secret organization, is tasked with keeping it in order. However, for main character Leonardo Watch, he is no one special, just a hobbyist photographer. However, when he obtains the All-Seeing Eyes of the Gods, he finds himself recruited into Libra.

You might have expected an ordinary detective show in Bungou Stray Dogs, but like Blood Blockade Battlefront, that was quickly thrown out the window. Both shows actively focus on supernatural mysteries, but outside of that action also have some really good comedy.

Hamatora

In this world, a small number of people have manifested the power to create small miracles. In Yokohama, two miracle users create a detective agency and use their powers to help people. However, one day they realize that the jobs they are receiving have a series of strange connections to a serial killer that their police friend is searching for.

Similar to Bungou Stray Dogs, Hamatora brings together a bunch of different personalities, gives them powers, and unleashes them upon interesting mysteries. However, it has a distinctly brighter color palate and a bit more comedy.

Psycho Pass

In the 22nd century, the justice system has changed. The Sibyl System now determines the threat level of each citizen by examining their mental state for criminal intent. This has become known as their Psycho-Pass. Once criminal intent has been identified, Inspectors like Akane Tsunemori, are in charge of subjugating them. However, this tough job is not without dangers. This is why Inspectors are paired with Enforcers, like Shinya Kougami, latent criminals with just the right amount of psychopathy to keep other criminals in their place.

While Bungou Stray Dogs is distinctly supernatural, Psycho-Pass is more sci-fi. Psycho-Pass also takes its self more seriously, as it’s bleak world demands. However, both shows craft a unique world where mysteries are solved differently than how you would expect.

For Fans of Group Dynamics

Durarara

Tokyo’s downtown district of Ikebukuro is awash in strange rumors, everything from colorless color gangs to a headless rider roaming town populate the rumors. For Mikado Ryuugamine who just moved there from Tokyo, he is but one witness to the district’s slew of strange events.

You will not only note that there are certain character personalities that are similar in these two shows, but both anime series also have an array of factions at play. Durarara has more and they all come together rather than the us versus them dynamic in Bungou Stray Dogs.

K

In this world, there are those referred to as Kings. They were individuals bestowed with great supernatural power and they use it to recruit others to their clan. To protect those members is a King’s great duty. However, after a murder of a Red clan member, a student is accused of homicide. During the man hunt, the city devolves into full-on war among the Kings.

While Bungou builds its mysteries, K has mystery right from the get go. You follow a character try to unravel it while basically a gang war is unfolding around him. Glossy and fast-paced, you will also notice similar fight animation.

A Certain Magical Index

Academy City in Japan is at least 30 years more advanced than the rest of the world, technologically. However, they also have a number of students that are honing their psychic abilities. Unfortunately for Touma Kamijou, he is a psychic rank of zero, but he has an ability that the city’s scientists can’t quite understand – the ability to negate other psychic abilities. Despite this, he lives a normal life until he meets Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a young girl who has memorized the entire forbidden grimoires, and she drags him into the realm of the supernatural.

If you enjoyed Bungou Stray Dogs for the array of characters that each felt like they had a life outside of the plot, then this is a great series to follow up on. Not only are there some interesting supernatural powers, but the world it crafts is fascinating as well.

For Fans of IRL People References

Drifters

While forming the rear guard for his uncle’s escape, Toyohisa Shimazu manages to mortally wound I Naomasa, but is critically wounded himself in the process. While trying to limp back home, he finds himself transported from the field to a hallway lined with doors. There a mysterious man sends him spiraling into another world. Dragged into the forest by two young elves, Toyohisa is patched up from two others from the Land of the Rising sun that turn out to be Yoichi Suketaka Nasu and Oda Nobunaga. From there, Toyohisa and his fellow historical figures, named “drifters” must save (or conquer) their new world.

While Bungou Stray Dogs has a lot of references to authors, Drifters takes a similar approach in creating characters from historical people. However, Drifters makes them the actual people while Bungou Stray Dogs just uses the names and perhaps a few unique quirks or references.

Aoi Bungaku

This series is several stories from Japanese literature adapted into anime.

In Bungou Stray Dogs, the most famous author is probably Ozaumu Daizai. If you were interested in more of his work, Aoi Bungaku features one of his novels adapted into anime form.

Read or Die the TV

Anita, Maggie, and Michelle are the Paper Sisters. They run their own detective agency in Hong Kong and investigate crimes, all the while using paper as their weapons of choice.

Like Bungou Stray Dogs, Read or Die features characters inspired by authors and literary charters. They then put them in a world where people have supernatural abilities, like the ability to manipulate paper.
