Anime Series Like Grand Blue

Iori Kitahara is excited to travel to the seaside town of Izu for his first year of college. He moves into his uncle’s scuba shop, Grand Blue, but things don’t go according to plan. Inside the shop is a bunch of naked and drunk upperclassman who get him drunk. After his cousin walks in, his college life starts to derail, but his work getting it back on track doesn’t go quite as planned either.

Grand Blue is comedy through and through, part slice of life and part random events, it is sure to tickle your funny bone. If you are looking for a similar comedy experience, then try these anime recommendations below.

For Fans of The Beach

Harukana Receive

In Okinawa, Haruka convinces her short friend Kanata to form a beach volleyball pair with her. Kanata was once discouraged from the sport, but Haruka has a way of convincing her to aim for the junior tournament.

While Harukana Receive is more sports and slice of life oriented, it has beach-oriented comedy similar to Grand Blue. However, what they both have in common is the sun, the sand, and, of course, the bikinis.

Amanchu

Hikari Kohinata grew up by the sea and as a result developed a deep love of scuba diving. On her first say of high school, her hobby and her relentless cheerfulness sweep up those around her in a maelstrom and they all cultivate a love for diving.

You will note immediately that Grand Blue, despite being named after and set in a scuba shop, has very little actual diving. However, if you do want a scuba anime, Amanchu is the way to go. Furthermore, Amanchu often has comedy through random events, but less so than Grand Blue.

Tsuritama

Yuki Sanada is a socially awkward young man that, due to his grandmother’s job, has to move around a lot. He has all but given up on making normal friends until he moved to the town of Endoshima. There he meets a man named Haru who claims to be an alien. It turns out Yuki was right on one account, he would never make “normal” friends.

Both series take place in a seaside town and focus on seaside activities, or rather, that’s what they advertise. Instead, with both shows you get very random comedy and a whole bunch of weird characters. However, Tsuritama has much less exposed skin.

For Fans of College Comedy

Genshiken

Sasahara Kanji is a college freshmen and hopes to join a club to share his secret thoughts about anime, manga, and gaming. While ardently believing he is not an otaku, he gets utterly humbled by a member of the society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, the club he wants to join. Will Kanji be able to accept his otakuness?

Genshiken and Grand Blue are both exquisite comedies about college club life. They focus on different types of clubs, but the relationships and the chaotic nature of the clubs are the same. Every episode in both shows, you never quite know what is going to happen, but it will angle to make you laugh.

Love Hina

After making a childhood promise with a girl who moved away, Keitaro is dedicated to getting into the prestigious Tokyo University. Unfortunately, he is hopelessly stuck failing his entrance exams. In order to continue trying, he moves out of his parent’s house into his grandmother’s inn to work as a manager. However, what he doesn’t know is that her hot springs inn is also an all-girls dorm.

A hot springs dorm and a seaside dive shop are not so different. They both attract people ready to bear bare skin and both, apparently, attract various odd folk. Furthermore, both shows have focus on more mature college students that still act like you would expect young people to act. If you want random comedy as well as fan service, both shows are good choices, but Love Hina has more romance.

For Fans of Lifestyle Change

Gintama

After aliens invade Japan, they put a prohibition on swords. However, Gintoki Sakata still possesses the heart of a samurai. Taking on odd jobs alongside of his friends, Gintama follows Gintoki during his chaotic life as an errand boy.

While different in setting and even era, you will note the comedy between Gintama and Grand Blue is extremely similar. Both focus on the comedy of really random events, and yet there is still a plot that moves forward.

Shimoneta

While Japan was once the pit of sexual depravity, new morality laws and the Peace Making system used to monitor the populace has seen Japan rise to the peaks of public morality. With all lewdness censored to the point that children do not know how babies are made, an infamous erotic terrorist named Blue Snow has risen. One day, average high schooler and son of an infamous erotic terrorist himself, Tanukichi Okuma, is saved by Blue Snow on his way to his new high morality high school, only to be drawn into her new erotic terrorist organization, SOX.

Grand Blue has dirty jokes, but Shimoneta is literally non-stop dirty jokes. What these series have in common aside from perverted comedy is that they focus on a guy that changes his view of life through the meeting of so many weird people.

The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior

Kazunari Usa is starting high school and finally talked his parents into letting him live alone. Excited for his new life, he moves into the Kawai Complex boarding house, only to find his new roommate a complete BSDM weirdo. Being put off by the eccentricity of it all, he is on his way to leave when he runs into his senior in high school, Ritsu Kawai, who also lives there. The sheer presence of this cool beauty talks him into giving life in this new house a try.

Despite still being a high school show, Kawai Complex focuses on more mature comedy and relationships in a similar way to Grand Blue. Furthermore, the living situations in the show are the same. Kawai Complex has a guy move into a boarding house for school and is surrounded by weirdos. Grand Blue has a guy move into his uncle’s for school and is surrounded by weirdos.
