Infinity War’s Alternate Ending Was Even Darker Than the Final Version

The ending of Avengers: Infinity War could have been much darker, depicting Thanos walking through a river of blood.

The climax of the Marvel Studios blockbuster showed Josh Brolin’s Mad Titan assemble the six Infinity Stones and wipe out half of life in the universe with the snap of his fingers. If seeing some of the franchise’s best-loved heroes turn to dust wasn’t enough, the movie’s VFX team envisioned Thanos walking on a river of blood, intended to represent his countless victims, as he encounters a young Gamora.

Speaking with VFX Supervisor Dan DeLeeuw at Digital Domain, Slashfilm learned about the grisly early, alternate ending. According to DeLeeuw “it got a bit dark,” and the blood idea was scrapped. Bloodthirsty fans can see how the sequence would’ve looked in a prototype video from Digital Domain, at about the 3:40 mark.

Digital Domain decided to emphasize the power of the Soul Stone and what it could mean moving forward. As for Thanos’ trip to Soul World, fans will have to wait and see how that comes into play in Avengers 4. There are numerous theories about the fallen heroes being trapped in the Soul Stone, so at least they aren’t swimming in a river of their own blood.

Although recent movies like Black Panther and Thor: Ragnarok have included darker subplots of murder and banishing your own child, Infinity War raised the bar when it came to somber MCU entries. From the early deaths of Heimdall and Loki, the movie lived up to the promise of being a more mature movie. That said, having Thanos walk through the blood of his victims is a little dark even for the likes of Zack Snyder and the DC Extended Universe.

Infinity War rounded off its action-packed run time with Thanos’ tragic reunion with Gamora and the haunting “What did it cost?” line. While strolling through blood would’ve been visually striking, Infinity War settled on something that was a little more family-friendly.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston and Josh Brolin.
