Dave Bautista Responds to Disney’s Decision to Not Rehire James Gunn

Guardians of the Galaxy actor Dave Bautista has responded to Disney’s decision not to rehire James Gunn. Gunn was fired from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 last month when several of the director’s offensive, years-old tweets were recirculated by right-wing agitators. Since then, Bautista is been vocal about his dissatisfaction.

Today, though, the actor has responded to recent reports that Disney will stand firm in its decision to cut ties with Gunn by sarcastically adopting the rhetoric of the very group that coordinated behind-the-scenes to have Gunn fired.

Thanks ⁦@Disney⁩ !! Making America great again! 🇺🇸 https://t.co/t6A4030xkS

“Thanks @Disney!!” Reads Bautista’s tweet. “Making America great again!” The latter half of Bautista’s tweet is a reference to the campaign slogan of United States President Donald Trump, whose policies and public statements have consistently generated ire on the world stage. The people who disseminated Gunn’s tweets across the internet, thus resulting in the director’s firing, are fringe supporters of the current president. The slogan has become associated with policies of intolerance since its inception.

Bautista has been frank about his disdain for Disney’s decision to cave to the organized smear campaign. When news of Gunn’s firing first reached Bautista, he responded via Twitter by claiming that Gunn is “one of the most loving, caring, good natured people” he has ever met and that, though the director has made mistakes, he did not believe that the call to fire him was just. The actor would go on to call out those he believed to be responsible for the firing, referring to them as cybernazis, and decrying those who did not vocally support Gunn.

More recently, Bautista has been in the news for his claim that he will ask Disney to recast his role if Gunn’s script isn’t used — the director submitted a first draft of his script just shortly before his firing. While all signs point to Disney using the script (though how much of it will remain Gunn’s words after it is inevitably put to production remains unclear), that has not stopped Bautista from railing against Disney, as today’s tweet shows.

Bautista is not the only celebrity who has voiced their support for Gunn. The entire Guardians of the Galaxy cast penned a letter calling for Gunn to be rehired. Michael Rooker, Selma Blair, Bobcat Goldthwait, Mike Colter, Kurt Russel, Jim Starlin and even Jerry Seinfeld have all voiced their support for Gunn in one way or another since news of the firing broke.
