Jim Lee ‘Knows’ Superman’s Red Trunks Will Be Gone Again ‘At Some Point’

Superman’s red trunks are set to return in Action Comics #1000, but DC Entertainment co-publisher Jim Lee doesn’t think that necessarily means that they’re here to stay.

“I knew when I took them off in the New 52 that they were going to come back,” Lee said at WonderCon in Anaheim, as reported by CBR. “It was just a matter of time. We figured the 1000th issue was as good a time as any. The danger with creating new costumes is that someone always loves it, so I’m sure the trunks will leave again at some point. At the end of the day, I have no horse in the race. I have fun drawing both.”

It was Lee who designed Superman’s costume for the 2011 New 52 relaunch that dropped the signature trunks and added a metallic sheen. For DC’s 2016 Rebirth initiative, the Last Son of Krypton also briefly lost his red boots; however, those returned in April 2017.

Along with the trunks, the new costume brings the return of Superman’s yellow belt, last seen in 2011. The design also integrates the blue metallic cuffs from the original Rebirth design.

Tomasi, Patrick Gleason, José Luis García-López, Tom King, Clay Mann, Jordie Bellaire, Brad Meltzer, John Cassaday, Laura Martin, Louise Simonson, Jerry Ordway, Scott Snyder and Tim Sale.
