News Prison School Manga Gets Stage Musical in January
Akira Hiramoto's school battle comedy inspires January 31-February 4 musical





A stage musical adaptation of Akira Hiramoto's Prison School manga has been green-lit. The musical will run from from January 31 to February 4 in The Pocket theater in Tokyo's Nakano ward. Fumi Hatamasa is directing the play and penning the script.

The cast includes:

Ryōran Hyakka as Kiyoshi Iori Hayashi as Gakuto Mizuki Hayashi as Shingo Hidemasa Shiozawa as Joe Daifuku Mizawa as Andre Kenichi Kobayashi as the Chairman Yuka Okabayashi as Mari Niko as Hana Seira Adachi as Meiko Chihiro Nagase as Chiyo momona as Anzu Hanaho Tomomatsu as Mayumi Yumika Hatta Runa Kanno





North American publisher Yen Press publishes the Prison School manga for North America, and it describes the series:

Hachimitsu Private Academy was a revered and elite all-girls' boarding school on the outskirts of Tokyo...once upon a time. But with the new school year comes a revision to school policy: Boys are to be admitted into the student body for the first time ever. But on his first day at Hachimitsu, Kiyoshi Fujino discovers that he's one of only five boys enrolled at the school. Their numbers overwhelmed by the thousand girls in the student body, is it heaven or hell that awaits these five (un)fortunates?!

Hiramoto launched the manga in Kodansha's Young Magazine in February 2011, and Kodansha published the manga's 27st volume on Monday. Yen Press published the manga's third English volume on March 22. The manga won the Best General Manga award alongside Yūji Moritaka and Keiji Adachi's Gurazeni manga at Kodansha's 37th Annual Manga Awards in 2013. As of December 2015, the manga has more than 7.5 million copies in print. ReDrop (Natsu Koi) launched the Fukukaichō wa Ganbaru (The Vice President is Doing Her Best) spinoff manga in Kodansha's Young Magazine the 3rd magazine in August 2016.

The 12-episode television anime adaptation premiered in July 2015, and Funimation streamed the anime with English subtitles as it aired in Japan, and also streamed the series with an English broadcast dub. A live-action television series adaptation premiered in Japan in October 2015.

The manga also received an original anime DVD (OAD) bundled with the manga's 19th Japanese volume in March 2016.
