Sega Sammy Holdings released its financial report for the 2017 fiscal year on Monday. The report breaks down its unit sales for some of its game franchises in both packaged and digital download sales. The franchises, including the year they first debuted, are as follows (totals approximate):
Megami Tensei: 7.2 million units (across 28 editions since 1987) Persona: 8.5 million units (across 13 editions since 1996) Etrian Odyssey: 1.8 million units (across 9 editions since 2007) Sonic the Hedgehog: 360 million units (since 1991) Puyopuyo: 25 million units, including AM-registered IDs (since Sega acquired franchise in 1998; franchise first debuted in 1991) Yakuza: 10.5 million units (across 75 editions since 2005) ALADDIN: 570,000 pachislot/pachinko/amusement machines (across 14 editions since 1989) Beast King: 490,000 pachislot/pachinko/amusement machines (across 15 editions since 2001) Phantasy Star: 4.5 million registered IDs for Phantasy Star Online 2 (franchise launched 1987) Chain Chronicle: 10 million downloads (across two editions since 2013) Sega feat. Hatsune Miku Project: 5.5 million units (across 52 editions since 2009) Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star): 2.74 million pachislot/pachinko/amusement machines (across 33 editions since 2002) Souten-no-Ken: 440,000 pachislot/pachinko machines (across 9 editions since 2009)
The Persona series began as a spinoff to Megami Tensei. The latest game in the series, Persona 5, has itself shipped 1.8 million units worldwide. The game debuted for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in Japan in September 2016 and in North America on April 4.
The report also indicates that Sega's operating income for the year is 29.5 billion yen (about US$260 million), up 68% or 11.9 billion yen (about US$105 million) from last year.
Sega Sammy Holdings took over operations of Megami Tensei and Etrian Odyssey developer Atlus' former parent company in 2013.
