Studio updates on A.I.C.O., My Hero Academia, Bungo Stray Dogs, Eureka Seven projects

The Japanese news website Gigazine posted a summary on Monday for the panel that anime studio BONES (My Hero Academia, Eureka Seven) held during the Machi Asobi vol.19 event in Tokushima earlier on Monday. BONES president Masahiko Minami was among the presenters at the panel. During the panel, the staff gave updates on the studio's current projects.

According to Gigazine, BONES' studio A is currently working on Netflix's original A.I.C.O. -Incarnation- anime series. Production on the anime is finished and it is currently being delivered. The studio will reveal more information about the project in December. Kazuya Murata (Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos) is directing the science-fiction anime. The series will run for 12 episodes.

The anime will premiere simultaneously worldwide on Netflix in spring 2018.

BONES' studio B worked on the recent Mob Psycho 100 anime, and is also in charge of the currently airing Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond anime. The 15th volume of ONE's original Mob Psycho 100 manga will have new information on its wraparound jacket band when it ships on October 19.

According to Gigazine's report, the first episode of the Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond anime had around 9,800 drawings, whereas the average anime episode has around 4,000-5,000 drawings.

The anime adaptation of ONE's Mob Psycho 100 manga premiered in Japan in July 2016 and Crunchyroll streamed the series with English subtitles as it aired in Japan. Funimation streamed an English dub for the anime last December. Yuzuru Tachikawa (Death Parade) directed the anime.

BONES' studio C is in charge of the My Hero Academia anime, and is currently working on the anime's recently announced third season. Minami revealed that the studio has already begun production on the third season.

The new season will cover the forest school trip arc from Kōhei Horikoshi's original My Hero Academia manga. The staff will reveal more information about the new series at a later date. Funimation will stream the third season.

The second season premiered in Japanese with English subtitles on Crunchyroll and Hulu on April 1, and FunimationNow is streaming the English dub. The anime's first 13-episode season premiered in April 2016.

BONES' studio D is in charge of the Bungo Stray Dogs anime, which won awards for its character design, sound, script, and directing during the event's "Newtype Anime Awards." (BONES itself won first place in the Studio Award during the event.) The studio is currently working on Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple, the franchise's new anime film.

Minami said that director Takuya Igarashi has already completed the storyboards for the film, adding that the fact "may surprise [Fullmetal Alchemist director Seiji] Mizushima," who was also participating in the panel.

Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple will open in Japan in early spring 2018. Yoji Enokido is returning to write the film's original story, in collaboration with original manga writer Kafka Asagiri and artist Sango Harukawa.

BONES' studio E is working on the Eureka Seven: Hi - Evolution anime film trilogy. Minami said that the studio is already working on the second film, and only offered that the second film will "surprise," and the third film will be "excellent."

The first film opened in Japan on September 16, ranking at #8 and earning about 63 million yen (about US$561,137) in its opening weekend.

The film made its worldwide debut at Otakon on August 12. The first film will also open this fall in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Funimation is in charge of the North American release, and Madman Entertainment is in charge of the Australian and New Zealand release. BONES also plans to open the film in other countries "simultaneously."

Regarding the possibility of a second Space Dandy anime, Minami remarked that it would get made if he won the lottery. (Note: the first "season" of Space Dandy aired as a split-cour series, with 13 episodes in each cour premiering in January 2014 and July 2014.)

The studio noted that this year is the 10th anniversary of the Sword of the Stranger anime film, and the film will stream in Japan around the end of the year.

The studio will celebrate its 20th anniversary on October 28, 2018. Mizushima will also be celebrating his 20th anniversary since debuting as a director on Generator Gawl in 1998.
